- Indoors (Absorbing the Heat): Warm, muggy air from your hallway gets pulled into the return duct and blown across your indoor evaporator coil. The freezing-cold liquid refrigerant inside that coil acts like a completely dry sponge. Because heat energy naturally migrates toward colder temperatures, the heat in your home’s air jumps straight into that refrigerant. What gets blown back into your living room isn’t “new” cold air—it’s just your original indoor air with the heat stripped out.
- The Compressor (Squeezing the Energy): The heat-laden refrigerant travels along the copper line to the compressor outside. The compressor squeezes the gas, which skyrockets its pressure and temperature, preparing it to dump that thermal payload.
- Outdoors (Dumping the Heat): Now your refrigerant sponge is dripping wet with indoor thermal energy. The outdoor condenser fan blows ambient air across the aluminum fins of your outdoor coil, wringing that indoor heat out into the open air.
Once the heat is dumped, the refrigerant passes through a tiny metering device, instantly expands, drops back down to a freezing temperature, and travels back inside to steal another load of heat.
The Secret Second Half: Moisture Removal

When warm, damp indoor air hits that ice-cold indoor coil, the moisture in the air condenses into liquid water—exactly like heavy sweat forming on a cold glass of sweet tea on a humid porch. That moisture drains into a pan and flows out of your home through a condensate line.
