Types of AC units

If you’re in the market for air conditioning installation, our AC experts will help you find the perfect unit for your needs. Here’s a look at the three most common AC configurations.

Window Air Conditioner

We’re certain that most if not all of our customers have seen or owned a window air conditioner. Commonly seen in apartments and older homes, window air conditioners are used to cool a single room. What makes window AC units unique is that all of the necessary components: cooling coil, evaporator, condenser, compressor, and expansion valve/coil – are packed into a single AC unit. This box is fitted into a slot so that it “hangs” half in the room and half outside, either in a window sill or a wall with a slot cut into it.

Split Air Conditioner

When you want to cool 1 – 3 rooms, a split air conditioner is a good choice. It’s called a “split” air conditioner because it comes in two parts: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit holds components like the expansion valve, compressor, and condenser. The indoor section has the cooling fan and the evaporator/cooling coil. The benefit of a split AC unit over a window unit is that no wall slot or window sill placement is required. Also, split units are smaller and more aesthetically appealing.

Packaged Air Conditioner

Virtually every home with air conditioning utilizes a packaged air conditioner. The most common arrangement is the one-unit setup, in which all of the necessary components are packaged together and creates cooled air. This cooled air is funneled through a high-capacity blower that distributes the AC through a home’s ductwork.

AC Maintenance

The key to getting the most out of your AC unit is keeping up with regular maintenance needs. Some of this maintenance is seasonal: for example, our team will get your AC unit ready for the busy summer and fall months – and when the cold air arrives, we’ll ensure your AC system is well-prepared to weather the snow and cold until spring arrives once more. The most important maintenance requirement is to routinely replace the AC unit’s filter. Other items that you’ll want to maintain are the evaporator coil and condenser coil, the coil fins, and the condensate drains. If you keep up with cleaning the coils and fins, and ensuring the drain is always unclogged, your AC unit should run for a long time.

AC Repair

AC units, like any other machine, are comprised of numerous parts required to work in unison in order to do a job. Criteria such as age, weather, and lack of regular maintenance will eventually lead to a need for ac repair. Here are the five most common reasons why you’ll need to contact our AC experts in McHenry County for repairs:

  • Your AC unit runs, but the air isn’t cold
  • Water is dripping from the unit
  • Your AC unit is making odd noises
  • The AC unit is cooling certain parts of your home, but not others
  • The AC system stops working completely
Whatever your needs - ac installation, maintenance, or repair - count on Arctic Heating and Cooling for efficient, inexpensive solutions that keep your family cool all summer long.
